Housing Options

The type of housing you choose during your overseas education experience will have a large impact on how enjoyable your overall experience will be.
Different housing choices provide different levels of privacy, independence, and support. Below, you will find descriptions of the most common types of housing available to you on or near the school you will be attending:

Homestay:
Living with a local family that the school staff or a homestay placement service has selected for you. You will usually be provided with a private bedroom and share a bathroom with homestay family members. Meals are provided by the family and you can expect to eat together with your homestay family. Homestay housing is a good housing choice if you need to improve your English skills and/ or will be living overseas or away from home for the first time. A homestay experience can provide a rich and memorable experience and give you opportunities to quickly improve your English and understanding of North American customs.

Residence Halls/Dormitories:
Living in residence halls or dormitories, helps you get quickly involved in school life with other students. Many resident halls do not include kitchens, so a prepaid meal plan at the school cafeteria is usually included in the cost of residence hall housing.
Most residence hall rooms are designed for two people so you may have to share your sleeping and study space with another person you have not met before you arrive.
Resident Advisors [RA's] are students who live in the residence hall and are responsible for conducting new student orientations, organizing social activities and helping you with questions, concerns or problems you may have.

Student Apartments:
Student apartments offer more personal living space than residence halls, but most require you to buy and cook your own food. Optional meal plans may be available at some schools. Student apartments usually have a Resident Advisor or Resident Manager that lives close by to assist you with any questions or problems you may have.
