To become fully prepared for a North American education program, international students need to meet the English proficiency requirements of the programs they wish to join. Below are some of the minimum English requirements for getting admitted to different programs/schools.
Private High Schools:
Minimum SLEP test score of 52 needed before applying. Many high schools will also accept scores from the TOEFL exam or other internationally-recognized English proficiency tests as an alternative to the SLEP test.
Community Colleges:
Minimum TOEFL exam score of 133 points [Computer-Based Test] or 52 points [Internet-Based Test] before applying. Many community colleges will also accept scores from the IELTS exam, STEP Eiken test or completion of a UPP-recommended English Program as alternatives to the TOEFL exam.
Technical/Career Schools:
Minimum TOEFL exam score of 213 points [Computer-Based Test] or 52 points [Internet-Based Test] before applying. Many schools will also accept scores from other internationally-recognized English proficiency tests such as the IELTS exam or may require a phone interview.
4-Year Colleges and Universities:
Minimum TOEFL exam score of 213 points [Computer-Based Test] or 79 points [Internet-Based Test] before applying.
Several schools will also accept scores from other internationally-recognized English proficiency tests such as IELTS or completion of a UPP-recommended English program as an alternative to the TOEFL exam.
Graduate Programs:
Minimum TOEFL exam score of 213 points [Computer-Based Test] or 79 [Internet-Based Test] before applying. Several programs will also accept scores from other internationally-recognized English proficiency tests such as IELTS as an alternative to the TOEFL exam.
